Hot Water Cylinders

In your hot press is what a lot of householders call the "boiler" "hot tank" or "immersion", however the correct term is "cylinder", this stores all the hot water in your home. Modern hot water cylinders come pre-lagged with an insulating foam layer ,so no need for them old lagging jackets that never quite fit correctly. Terms like 'rapid recovery cylinder' means it will heat back up quickly after you have used the existing hot water. Pressurised copper cylinders are appearing more on the Irish market and are very well insulated , however they require a high pressure feed and a lot of mains water supplies in Dublin are simply not adequate, so the householder would need to fork out for a booster pump and a plumber to fit it, increasing the cost.

Cylinder Replacement

Modern copper cylinders come with tappings for immersions and central heating coils, this gives the benefit of two heat sources. Thick insulation stores the hot water for longer. ESB or Goldshield cylinders have two immersions and a timeclock, the bottom immersion comes on when electricity prices are cheaper, usually around 4:00am, this heats the water and any extra water can be got by using the boost setting on your timeclock, this brings on the top immersion heater. Is it the immersion heating element or the immersion thermostat?
If the water was overly hot just before the immersion stopped working, then it is usually the thermostat that has failed.
If the immersion just suddenly stopped working then it is usually the element that has burned out.
*Sometimes the immersion switch or clock/timer can be the culprit and no power is going to the immersion heater.
